Strawberries are in season. They are every where. Fruit vendors, ,markets, street stalls,  kiosks in malls, vegetable vendors every where just every where.Every time I step out of my home , they are almost like waving out to me ‘Take us home, will ya?’

And take them home I did. Strawberry smoothies, yogurts, milk shakes, salads, tried this and tried that. Now I wanted to try something else.Muffins?? Souffle?? or “Bread”!!   Yes bread. Strawberry Bread. Or even better “Strawberry and Banana Bread”. A warm slice of Strawberry and banana bread with a cup of hot green tea…mmmm..sounds tempting.Right? Go ahead and bake it. You won’t regret you did. The aroma wafting out of the oven while your bread is baking is to dive for. Mark my words. Your kids are going to remember this fondly long after they have grown up and you have grown old. Am I over doing with the marketing bit? :)

But, I meant every word of it.Enjoy the recipe and the pictures, while I warm up a slice of this delicious bread left over from yesterday, in the microwave and make myself a cup of hot green tea to celebrate my 100th post. A big thank you to each and every one reading this for encouraging me with your likes and kind comments. Please continue to do so….

Recipe: Strawberry and Banana Bread

What you need:

  • 115 g butter
  • 280 g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup strawberries
  • 3 overripe bananas
  • 320 g all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. vanilla essence
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 4 tsp. sugar to toss the strawberries

Method:

  1. Heat the butter on medium heat or in a microwave until golden brown.(pass through strainer if there are any blackened bits)
  2. Preheat the oven to 350°F or 180° c
  3. Grease a 9×5 inch loaf tin. Line with a butter paper.
  4. Add sugar to the butter and whisk well on medium speed.
  5. Add eggs and whisk well.
  6. Add mashed bananas, vanilla,salt and buttermilk.Combine.
  7. Sift the flour and soda together. Add to the batter.
  8. Chop each strawberry into two. Toss them with sugar.
  9. Add strawberries to the bread batter and mix lightly. Make sure they don’t get mashed up.
  10. Pour this mix into the loaf tin and bake for 80 to 90 minutes until the skewer when inserted in the center comes out clean.
  11. Now the most important step. Having patience. Let it cool before you slice it up.

Notes:

  • My loaf tin was slightly smaller due to which the batter rose a  little bit out of the tin. Didn’t make any difference except that the outer edge was a little bit crusty. But my family liked the crusty part.
  • You can add walnuts or pecans if you like.
  • If you think the top is browning quickly, cover it loosely with aluminium foil.
